As the name implies, the Amphicar was designed as a multipurpose vehicle, capable of navigating both roads and bodies of water. As a car, its 1147cc Triumph four-cylinder produced a modest 47 horsepower, giving it leisurely acceleration and a top speed of just 70 MPH. On the water, the Amphicar had a top speed of seven knots, meaning it wasn’t the first choice of tow boat for waterskiers. Less than 4,000 were assembled before production ended in 1965, and today these quirky models enjoy a relatively robust following. This 1965 Amphicar for sale on Hemmings.com seems to offer a solid foundation for a restoration project, although it appears good enough to use (on land and in the water) in its current condition. From the seller’s description:
For sale 1965 Amphicar Convertible. Has only been used in fresh water (no salt) Brand new hub-caps and door handles, tires like new. Was last driven in water 6 years ago, seals still good, No reason why this car can not go back in the water and run/float with no problem. Car was used for fishing and has had some minor dings and scrapes from branches etc. No rust but poor quality paint. Floor pan is original and in great condition. The black areas shown in the photo’s are where the red paint has worn away showing the black primer underneath. There are no rust holes. Only 34,000 original miles. Needs some minor work ie. engine runs good but carburetor could use rebuilding, starter drive (bendix) getting a bit weak, good top but has a couple of small tears the size of a dime (easy fix), the brake pedal goes to the floor I can not see any leaks may just need bleeding? All parts are readily available from Gord Souter in Orillia, Ontario or Gordon imports in U.S.
